Part of the City, With Its Own Character
Tree Service in Algiers comes with a detail newcomers sometimes miss: although it sits on the West Bank next to Gretna and Terrytown, Algiers is the only Orleans Parish community on that side of the Mississippi. It has been the city's 15th Ward since annexation in 1870. That means public trees here fall under New Orleans Parks and Parkways, not Jefferson Parish, and the permit rules are the city's.
Algiers began in 1719 as a plantation, the Company Plantation, and grew into a town around shipbuilding, dry docks and rail yards. A fire in 1895 destroyed much of the town around the courthouse, and much of what stands in Algiers Point today went up in the years after. The Navy set up a station here in 1901. Later, from the 1950s on, subdivisions spread south and east into areas such as Tall Timbers, Behrman, Whitney and Lower Algiers. So within a few miles you get tight 19th-century lots near the ferry and roomy ranch-house yards farther out.
What that means for the trees
Algiers Point and Old Aurora: Large old oaks and pecans crowded onto small lots, often hanging over neighbors and sidewalks. The work is mostly careful pruning and occasional sectional removal with ropes, since there is rarely space to drop anything whole.
Tall Timbers, Brechtel and the newer subdivisions: More room, more mid-sized trees planted fifty or sixty years ago, and a fair share of fast-growing species like water oak and Chinese tallow that tend to decline at that age. Removals and stump grinding are common here.
The termite story Algiers is known for
LSU AgCenter, writing about Formosan subterranean termites in Louisiana, cited one Algiers colony estimated at 70 million termites. For comparison, it said a native Louisiana colony may have up to a million. The same article notes that Formosan termites infest the wood of living trees and use them as a base to reach houses. In Algiers, a tree with mud tubes up the bark or a swarm coming out of a cavity in spring is something to have looked at, both for the tree's sake and the house next to it.
City trees on the West Bank
If the tree is on the neutral ground, in a park, or between the sidewalk and the street, it is a City tree. Requests for those go to 311 or (504) 658-3200, and any work on them needs the city's Tree Maintenance Work Permit. Private trees on your lot are what we quote and handle directly.
Older lots, older roots
Around Algiers Point, many houses sit close to the sidewalk with narrow side yards, and the biggest trees are often in the back. Roots from those trees run under fences, sheds and neighboring slabs. When a removal is needed, we leave the root system in the ground and grind the stump only as far as is safe near structures, rather than pulling roots that could undermine a neighbor's footing.

Algiers Facts
- Only Orleans Parish ground on the West Bank. Algiers is the only Orleans Parish community on the West Bank and has been New Orleans' 15th Ward since its 1870 annexation, so city tree rules apply.
- A very large termite colony. LSU AgCenter reported an Algiers Formosan termite colony estimated at 70 million individuals and noted these termites infest living trees.
- Old town, later suburbs. Founded as a plantation in 1719, the town was partly destroyed by an 1895 fire; suburban development spread across the rest of Algiers from the late 1950s.

Algiers Questions
Does Jefferson Parish handle public trees in Algiers?
No. Algiers is part of the City of New Orleans, so trees on public ground here are maintained by New Orleans Parks and Parkways. Report problems through 311.
Can you take down a big pecan on a tight Algiers Point lot?
Yes. On small lots, a large tree is usually removed in sections, with each piece lowered on ropes instead of dropped. We plan around fences, neighboring roofs and the street before setting a date.
What are signs of termites in a tree?
Look for mud tubes running up the trunk from the soil, soft or hollow-sounding wood, and winged termites swarming from the tree on warm evenings in late spring. Any of these is worth an inspection, especially if the tree is close to the house.
Are the oaks along the Algiers levee and parks the city's?
Trees in city parks and on neutral grounds in Algiers are City trees maintained by Parks and Parkways, so they are not something a neighbor can hire out without the city permit. If one is dropping limbs into your yard, file a 311 request and keep a record of the ticket number.
