Sixty-Plus Years of Growth

Tree Service in Terrytown is largely about trees that are as old as the neighborhood. Developer Paul Kapelow opened Terrytown to a media tour on March 5, 1960, to show off new home-building ideas, and to the public the next day. He named it after his first daughter, Terry, and Carol Sue Avenue after his second. Terry Parkway and Carol Sue are still the main streets. Many of the oaks, pecans and fast-growing shade trees homeowners planted in that first decade are now taller than the houses and spreading across property lines.

A dense suburb on low ground

Terrytown is compact and busy: about 3.66 square miles of land and 25,278 residents in the 2020 census, a density near 6,900 people per square mile. Its listed elevation is three feet below sea level. Lots are modest, houses are mostly single-story, and a big tree in one yard usually shades two or three others. That combination, close houses and old trees on soft, low ground, drives most of the work we do here.

Common Terrytown requests

  • Roof clearance: Limbs from 60-year-old trees resting on low-pitched ranch roofs, filling gutters and scraping shingles.
  • Removals of declining trees: Water oaks, hackberries and Chinese tallows planted for quick shade decades ago often have rot and dead tops now.
  • Stumps: Old stumps left after past storms, and new ones after removals.
  • Line clearance on the house side: Branches around the service drop to the home (lines on the utility side are the power company's job).

Parish rules for the street strip

Terrytown is unincorporated, so public right-of-way belongs to Jefferson Parish. Removing a tree or large shrub there requires a free Parkways permit, applied for by the owner of the adjacent property, and the stump has to come out as part of the job. If you want to plant on the right-of-way, the parish's Desirable Tree List applies. It keeps species like water oak, hackberry, Chinese tallow and bald cypress off parish property and steers small trees such as crape myrtle and Little Gem magnolia to strips under overhead lines.

A younger, busier neighborhood

Census QuickFacts shows only 11.6% of Terrytown residents are 65 or older, lower than most of the West Bank, with an average of 2.73 people per household. About half of the homes, 49.2%, are owner-occupied. For landlords with rentals here, we can coordinate access with the tenant and send the estimate to the owner.

Terrytown Questions

The tree in my front yard is as old as the house. Should I be worried?

Age alone is not a problem, but species matters. Live oaks can go for centuries, while water oaks and hackberries often decline at 50 to 60 years. If yours has dead limbs at the top or mushrooms at the base, have it looked at.

Who trims around the power lines at the street?

Lines between poles are maintained by the electric utility. We handle branches around the service line on your side, and we keep a safe distance from anything energized.

Can I replace a removed street-strip tree with a bald cypress?

Not on parish right-of-way. Jefferson Parish lists bald cypress among trees not allowed on parish property. A Class A tree such as live oak or Shumard oak may be allowed on a wide strip without overhead lines, with a Parkways permit.

Do you work on weekends?

Scheduling depends on the job and the crew calendar. Tell us what works for you when you call, and we will find a date that fits.

How close to the house can a live oak safely grow?

There is no single distance, but a live oak eventually spreads wider than it is tall, so trees planted within a few feet of a Terrytown slab house usually end up needing regular reduction pruning. Smaller species are a better choice for tight front yards.
