A Small City With Settled Yards
Tree Service in Harahan is mostly maintenance for people who plan to stay. Harahan covers only about 2.02 square miles of land, and Census QuickFacts figures for 2020-2024 show 74.1% of homes are owner-occupied and 93.0% of residents were in the same house a year earlier. A quarter of the population, 25.3%, is 65 or older. That adds up to a lot of mature trees that have been in the yard for decades, owned by people who would rather schedule pruning than climb a ladder themselves.
How Harahan grew
The city takes its name from James Theodore Harahan, president of the Illinois Central Railroad, which built a repair yard and roundhouse here in 1894. The Harahan Land Company subdivided the former Southern University tract in 1914, Harahan incorporated as a village in 1920, and wartime work and Camp Plauché next door drove rapid growth. By 1960 the population passed 9,000, and it peaked at 13,037 in 1970 once the Earhart Expressway made it a bedroom community. Most of the trees in Harahan's yards were planted somewhere along that timeline, which is why so many of them are now big.
Wind off the river
Hurricane Zeta's eye passed over the New Orleans area on October 28, 2020. A WeatherFlow station in Harahan recorded 56 mph sustained wind with a 75 mph gust. Zeta was a fast-moving storm, and in Harahan the damage it caused was mostly broken limbs and downed trees rather than flooding. That pattern is common here: the trees that fail are the ones that were already carrying weight on long limbs or had decay in a main stem.
What we usually do on a Harahan visit
Live oaks over roofs: reduction cuts back to strong laterals, keeping the canopy but taking weight off the house.
Older water oaks and pecans: checking for heart rot, dead tops and cracks; recommending removal when a tree is no longer safe near the house.
Hurricane-season prep: a light thinning and deadwood pass on the largest trees in late spring.
Stumps: grinding old stumps from past storms so the lawn can be leveled.
The old golf course land
Colonial Country Club opened in 1908 on the former Soniat Plantation home site, later became Colonial Golf and Country Club, hosted the 1954 New Orleans Women's Open, and closed in early 2012. Golf course land tends to carry rows of large, mature trees, and properties near former courses often inherit them. When a lot backs onto a stand of old trees, we look at the ones leaning toward the house as well as the ones in the yard itself.
Public trees
Harahan is an incorporated city. If a tree is on the public strip or a city property, check with the City of Harahan before any work. We handle the trees on your lot and will point out anything that looks like it sits on public ground.
Making it easy
For many Harahan homeowners, the simplest arrangement is a walk-through every few years and a written plan for which trees need attention when. Call (504) 384-7694 to set one up. call (504) 384-7694

Harahan Questions
Can you set up regular tree care so I don't have to remember?
Yes. Many Harahan owners prefer a planned schedule, such as a pruning pass on the big trees every few years. We note what was done each time so the next visit starts from that record.
How much should I worry about wind from a storm like Zeta?
Zeta produced a 75 mph gust in Harahan, which is enough to break weak limbs and topple compromised trees. Healthy, well-pruned trees usually come through with minor damage. The ones to worry about have cracks, decay or a heavy lean toward the house.
Is it okay to prune a live oak in summer?
Removing dead or broken limbs is fine any time. Heavier structural work is better done in the cooler months, both for the tree and to have it finished before peak hurricane season.
Do you haul away everything, or can I keep the mulch?
Either way. Many Harahan homeowners ask us to leave a pile of wood chips for beds. If you want that, say so before the work day and tell us where to dump it.
