When a Tree Has to Come Down
Tree removal in New Orleans is usually the last step after a tree has run out of good options. A trunk hollowed by Formosan termites, a water oak with its roots heaving the sidewalk, a dead pine, a Chinese tallow that has spread through the back fence, or a tree that took a hard lean in the last storm: these are the jobs we see most. Removal is permanent, so the first thing we do is make sure it is actually the right call. LSU AgCenter warns against cutting sound, wind-resistant trees just because they are big, and a healthy live oak or bald cypress usually deserves a pruning plan instead.
Signs a tree may need to go
- Mud shelter tubes on the trunk or carton material in an old limb scar, which point to Formosan termites working inside.
- Mushrooms or soft, crumbling wood at the base or root flare.
- A new lean, especially with cracked or lifted soil on the opposite side.
- Large dead limbs in the top of the crown, or bark falling away in sheets.
- Deep cracks or a split at a fork where two trunks meet.
- A low wind-resistance species, such as water oak, laurel oak, pecan or Chinese tallow, in poor condition and close to the house.
How removal works on a New Orleans lot
Very few trees here can simply be felled in one piece. Houses sit close together, backyards are reached through a side alley, and overhead lines run along the street. So most removals are done in sections: a climber or lift works from the top down, cutting limbs and short trunk pieces and lowering them on ropes where they cannot be dropped safely. On a large tree with no clear drop zone, a crane is sometimes the safest way to lift sections over the house. Angi puts crane service at roughly $250 to $600 a day, and complicated crane removals can run into several thousand dollars, so we only suggest one when it is genuinely the safer path.
Hollow and termite-damaged trees need extra care. A trunk that is mostly shell does not behave like solid wood when it is cut, so the rigging plan and the order of cuts change. Dead trees are similar: the wood gets more brittle every month, and a removal that is routine while a tree is alive can become a harder job a year later.
Whose tree is it?
If a tree stands on a neutral ground or in the strip between the sidewalk and the street, it is almost certainly a City tree, maintained by Parks and Parkways, and removing it without a City permit can lead to fines. We check this before quoting. If the tree is yours but leans over a neighbor's yard, it helps to talk with the neighbor before the work day, since sections may need to come down over their side.
What Removal Includes
Each line below appears on your quote so you know exactly what is and is not included.
Sectional takedown
Limbs and trunk pieces cut from the top down and lowered on ropes over roofs, fences and galleries.
Hollow and termite-damaged trees
A rigging plan built around how much sound wood is left, since hollow trunks do not cut like solid ones.
Crane-assisted removal
For large trees with no drop zone, sections lifted over the house when ropes alone are not the safe option.
Brush and log handling
Brush chipped, logs cut to length and left or hauled away, as written on the quote.
Stump option
The stump ground below grade on the same visit, or left for later if you prefer.

Ranges from LawnStarter's New Orleans price page (2026), Angi (2026) and HomeGuide (2026). Angi puts tight, hard-to-reach or unsafe sites at 25% to 50% more, and stump grinding is usually priced separately. Your written estimate is the price.
How a Removal Goes
1. Look at the tree and the ground
Crown, trunk, base and root flare, plus termite signs, lean, what is underneath and how a crew reaches it.
2. Confirm ownership
If it may be a City tree, we stop and send you to 311 and Parks and Parkways before anything else.
3. Written price
The method, the cleanup, the stump and the price for each tree, in writing.
4. Take it down in sections
Top to bottom, with ropes or a crane where needed, keeping roofs, fences and lines clear.
5. Clean up
Brush chipped, wood handled as agreed, the stump ground if included, and the yard raked out.

Why Choose Us for Tree Removal
Keep-or-remove honesty
If pruning would make the tree safe, we say so instead of selling a removal.
Plans for hollow wood
Termite-damaged trunks get a rigging plan that accounts for the missing wood.
Neighbors considered
We point out when sections will need to come down over a neighbor's yard so you can talk first.
Tree Removal Questions
How much does tree removal cost in New Orleans?
LawnStarter's New Orleans averages are about $308 for a small tree, $744 for a medium tree and $1,900 for a large one. Angi's national ranges run from $150 for a tree under 30 feet to $2,000 for one over 80 feet, with 25% to 50% added for hard-to-reach or unsafe sites. A tree over a house in a narrow side yard usually costs more than the same tree in an open lot. We give a written price after seeing it.
Can I remove the oak between my sidewalk and the street?
That strip is usually City property, and Parks and Parkways maintains all City trees there and on neutral grounds. Any work on a City tree needs a City tree work permit, and the City has fined property owners for cutting live oaks on public land beside their lots. Call 311 first.
Does a tree with termites have to be removed?
No. LSU AgCenter notes that infested trees can be treated, and many are. Removal makes sense when so much of the trunk or major limbs is hollow that the tree could fail onto something that matters. We tell you what we find and why.
Is the stump included in a tree removal?
Only if it is written on the quote. Most published price guides treat stump grinding as a separate line, and we list it separately so you can choose.
What happens to the wood?
You choose: logs left in rounds for you, cut to firewood length, or hauled away. Brush is chipped, and the chips can stay for mulch or leave with us.
