Slidell Gets the Rain
Tree Service in Slidell has a weather record few cities can match, partly because the National Weather Service forecast office for New Orleans and Baton Rouge is located in Slidell. During Hurricane Ida in 2021, that office measured 11.64 inches of rain, and other gauges in and around Slidell came in between about 11.3 and 11.7 inches. Ida also spun up two weak tornadoes, an EF1 and an EF0, on Eden Isle just south of the city. Heavy rain is what turns an ordinary windstorm into a tree-down storm here.
Why rain matters as much as wind
When the ground is saturated, roots lose their grip. A tree that would shrug off a 50 mph gust in a dry October can tip over in the same wind after eleven inches of rain. After a big rain event in Slidell, the calls we get most are: 1. Whole trees uprooted, root plate and all, often tall trees with modest root systems 2. Trees leaning against houses or other trees, still under tension 3. Broken tops and hanging limbs caught high in the canopy 4. Trees across fences and driveways If a tree is down on a line, stay away and call the utility before anything else.
Katrina and the ground
Katrina's surge pushed over ten feet of water into parts of Slidell in 2005, though most of the city is about two miles inland, and the unincorporated areas to the south and east saw 13 to 16 feet. The city itself sits at an elevation of about 13 feet, higher than the South Shore. Trees in the neighborhoods that sat in floodwater were stressed for years afterward, and some of the larger survivors still show dieback in the crown.
A railroad town that boomed
Slidell was founded in 1882 and 1883 while the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad was being built, and it was chartered in 1888. In the 1960s, NASA-related work nearly tripled the population, from 6,356 in 1960 to 16,101 in 1970. A lot of today's neighborhoods, and the trees in them, date from that boom and the decades that followed. The 2020 census counted 28,781 residents.
Homeowners, many of them older
Census QuickFacts (2020-2024) shows a 68.5% owner-occupied rate in Slidell and 21.4% of residents aged 65 and up. Plenty of our Slidell customers would rather not be on a ladder with a chainsaw, and they want someone who will clean up properly and leave the yard the way it was.

Slidell Questions
A tree is leaning on my house after a storm. Should I cut it myself?
No. A tree resting on a house is usually under tension, and cutting it in the wrong spot can make it spring or drop unpredictably. Keep people out of the area and call us at (504) 384-7694 to describe what you see.
Why did my tall tree come out of the ground roots and all?
After heavy rain, saturated soil loses its strength, and a tall tree with a relatively small root plate can lever itself out. That is especially common after storms that bring ten inches of rain or more, as Ida did in Slidell.
Can you grind the stumps from trees that fell in past storms?
Yes. Old stumps and root plates can be ground down and the holes filled so the yard can be mowed and replanted.
When should I have my trees checked in Slidell?
A spring inspection catches most problems before the heavy rain and wind of late summer. It is also worth a quick look after any storm that drops several inches of rain, since that is when roots are most likely to have shifted.
Do you clean up after removing a tree?
Yes. Brush is chipped, wood is hauled off or left in rounds if you prefer, and the work area is raked and blown clean before we leave.
