Pruning Trees That Spread Instead of Climb
Tree trimming and pruning in New Orleans means working with trees that grow out as much as up. A mature live oak can throw limbs 40 feet or more sideways, low enough to rest on a roof, a car or a neighbor's fence, and those long horizontal limbs are what give the city its look. Good pruning keeps that shape while taking weight off the ends of the longest limbs, clearing roofs and the street, and removing dead wood before a storm throws it through a window.
What we prune for
- Clearance: limbs lifted or shortened away from roofs, gutters, galleries, driveways and the street.
- Deadwood: dead and broken branches removed, which is the single most useful thing before hurricane season.
- Structure: on younger trees, choosing a main leader and spacing scaffold limbs so the tree grows strong forks instead of tight, weak ones.
- Weight reduction: long, heavy limbs shortened back to a side branch so there is less leverage on the attachment in wind.
- Light thinning: selected branches removed so wind and light move through the crown.
How the cuts are made
We follow ANSI A300, the American standard for tree pruning. In practice that means cutting just outside the branch collar instead of flush with the trunk, making reduction cuts back to a branch large enough to take over, and not leaving stubs. ISA guidance generally advises against removing more than about a quarter of a mature tree's live crown in one year, because the leaves are what feed the tree. It also means no climbing spikes on trees that are being pruned rather than removed, since every spike hole is a wound.
Topping and crape myrtles
Topping, cutting a tree's main stems back to stubs, is not an accepted pruning practice under the A300 standard. It produces clusters of fast, weakly attached sprouts and invites decay. You see it every winter on crape myrtles across the metro, cut back to the same knobs year after year. A crape myrtle that has outgrown its spot can be thinned and shaped instead, and a badly knuckled one can often be retrained over a few seasons. LSU AgCenter lists crape myrtle among the more wind-resistant small trees here, so it is worth keeping in good shape.
Before you prune near the street
If the limbs you want cleared belong to a tree between the sidewalk and the curb or on a neutral ground, the tree is likely a City tree, and Parks and Parkways requires a City permit for any work on it. What Pruning Covers
Most pruning visits combine several of these, written out tree by tree on the quote.
Live oak pruning
End-weight reduction on long lateral limbs, roof and street clearance, and deadwood removal, keeping the natural spread.
Crown cleaning
Dead, broken, crossing and rubbing branches removed throughout the crown.
Crown raising
Lower limbs lifted to clear roofs, walks, driveways and parked cars.
Structural pruning of young trees
Shaping young oaks, magnolias and cypress early so they grow strong forks and fewer problems later.
Crape myrtle and small tree shaping
Thinning and shaping without topping, including retraining trees that have been cut back to knobs.

How Pruning Works
1. Walk the tree with you
We talk through what you want cleared or reduced and look at the tree's structure and health.
2. Agree on the cuts
The quote says which limbs come off or get shortened, and why, tree by tree.
3. Prune to standard
Cuts at the branch collar or back to a lateral, with heavy pieces roped down over roofs and fences.
4. Haul-off and cleanup
Brush chipped or hauled, small debris raked from beds, roofs and gutters cleared of what fell there.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How often should a live oak be pruned?
For most mature live oaks around homes, every three to five years is a reasonable rhythm for deadwood removal and clearance, with younger trees benefiting from lighter structural pruning more often. A tree that hangs over a roof or lost limbs in a storm may need attention sooner. We can tell you after looking at it.
Should I cut my crape myrtle back every winter?
No. Cutting crape myrtles back to the same stubs every year, often called crape murder, is topping, and it leads to weak sprouts and swollen knobs. Thinning out crowded stems and removing seed heads you can reach keeps the tree tidy and stronger. If it has outgrown its spot, it can be reduced properly or replaced with a smaller variety.
The street tree's limbs hang over my driveway. Can you trim them?
Not without the City's say. A tree between the sidewalk and the curb is usually a City tree, maintained by Parks and Parkways, and any work on it needs a City tree work permit. Request trimming through 311 or (504) 658-3200, and we can handle the trees that stand on your side of the property line.
Does Spanish moss or resurrection fern hurt my oak?
Neither is a parasite; both use the tree only as a place to grow. A tree that is losing leaves and has heavy moss is usually a tree that is declining for some other reason, and that is what we look for.
What does tree trimming cost in New Orleans?
LawnStarter's New Orleans averages run about $133 for a small tree, $456 for medium and $896 for large. Big live oaks with long limbs over a house often fall in HomeGuide's $1,000-plus range for trees over 60 feet. The written quote is the price.
