Two Square Miles, Packed Close
Tree Service in Arabi is small-lot work. Arabi covers about 1.76 square miles of land on the east bank of the Mississippi, between the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans and Chalmette, and had 4,533 residents in the 2020 census. Houses sit close together, and a single large tree can shade three properties. Most of our Arabi jobs involve working around fences, neighboring roofs and parked cars with no open ground to drop anything.
A place that began with stockyards
Arabi started as Stockyard Landing, a community of stockyards and slaughterhouses; an 1851 map called it Jacksonburgh. Business interests got the state to move it from New Orleans into St. Bernard Parish in 1875. Friscoville Avenue was developed in 1907, and most of the area was declared a historic district in the 1970s. The ruins of LeBeau Plantation stood in that district until an arson fire in 2013.
After the water
On August 29, 2005, Katrina's surge put all of Arabi under water, more than 20 feet deep in some places. Very few trees came through that, and many of the ones that did declined over the next several years. So in most Arabi yards, the canopy you see now was planted or self-seeded after the storm. Volunteer trees that came up on their own along fences and foundations, often Chinese tallow and hackberry, are now 15 to 20 years old and causing trouble: cracking walks, lifting fence posts, and leaning over roofs.
What that usually means for a job here
- Volunteers along fence lines: cutting them out before they get bigger, then grinding or treating the stumps so they don't resprout
- Planted shade trees: structural pruning to correct competing trunks and clear the roof
- Older survivors: an honest look at root and trunk condition before deciding whether to prune or remove
- Tight-quarters removals: taking trees apart limb by limb and lowering pieces with ropes
Heavy rain counts too
During Hurricane Ida in 2021, the National Weather Service recorded 10.96 inches of rain at Meraux, just down the road, and 10.74 inches at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport. That kind of rain softens the ground under shallow-rooted trees, which is when the leaning starts. If a tree in your yard has shifted after a big rain, call (504) 384-7694 and keep people out from under it.
Stumps that keep coming back
Chinese tallow and hackberry often sprout again from a cut stump, which is why a fence line can look worse a year after someone sawed everything off at the ground. Grinding the stump well below the surface removes most of the buds that resprout. Where a stump sits tight against a fence or foundation and cannot be fully ground, we tell you up front that some sprouting may follow and how to deal with it.
Working with neighbors
On lots this close, tree work almost always involves the people next door. We are glad to explain the plan to a neighbor, figure out where we will need to stand or set up, and keep debris off their side. Get a free estimate

Arabi Questions
A tree came up on its own along my fence. Should I just leave it?
Usually it is better to take it out while it is small. Volunteer trees along fences and foundations, often Chinese tallow or hackberry, grow fast and end up lifting posts and slabs. The longer they grow, the more expensive removal becomes.
Can you remove a tree when my neighbor's house is a few feet away?
Yes. We take it down in small sections and lower each piece on a rope so nothing falls onto the neighboring roof. We will walk the plan through with you, and with the neighbor if you like, before the work day.
Do you work in the historic district?
Yes. Tree work on private lots in the Friscoville area is the same as anywhere else, but if the tree is on public property or tied to a historic structure, check with St. Bernard Parish first.
Do I need permission to remove a tree on my own lot in Arabi?
For a tree fully on private property, generally no, but if it sits on or near public right-of-way, check with St. Bernard Parish before work starts. We point out anything near the property line on the estimate visit.
